Creating music as Between Interval began as a way for Stefan Strand to take a break from his more kinetic musical pursuits. The Edge of a Fairytale (62'41") is his fourth CD of futuristic mindscapes. Realized using a fascinating palette of synthesized and sampled sounds, this album presents 11 works meant to occupy the mind of the listener with distinctive and evocative atmospherics.

Opening track ‘Delta Capricorni’ offers a pretty good indication as to to the sorts of deep ambient atmospheres to be found amongst the eleven tracks here, opening proceedings with sorts of vast synth pads, harmonic sweeps and deep, ominous bass drones you’d associate with Tangerine Dream or ‘Baraka’s Michael Stearns – indeed, it’s practically begging to be accompanied with some time-lapse video footage of desert clouds.

This album was barely audible background music. Those in the office either didn't realize there was "music" (I use the term loosely) playing or were so annoyed that they tried to stab out their eyes. (Okay, no stabbing took place, but they sure complained a hell of a lot about it. Babies.)

It's an impressive work, from the mystery of 'The Great Void' to the majesty of 'Portals In Time', with it's strings and cavernous electronic swells. Strand's fusions of light and dark; of gentle, natural landscapes and huge spacescapes, are seamless and mesmerizing.

These smooth compositions have a clean spacey nature, velvet drones and glossy washes welling up into curving waves of sound, softly undulating sequential phrases and patterns somewhere just below the surface. Dark, shifting masses of tone at times suggest enormous expanses, lighter strains faintly illuminating the gloom, atonal threads suggesting air movement.

This composer succeeds in creating an unusual kind of Ambient with this album, with beauty and mystery at the same time, and inspired by the indefinible charisma of the radio as a pioneering means of telecommunication as well as one of the most important ways, if not the main one, through which music has been popularized in the last century.

Laying bare the imagined world “From a Silent Surface” opens the album with effects like sonic stonefalls on a synthetic lake while strange rustling and distorted non-human voices lurk just beyond the foreground. This builds up to a moody drum-esque rhythm and constantly passing air pads and refrains briefly rippling as if they're decayed sirens. The mood gets thoughtful in the next track “Wishful Thinking”. Voices, including brief operatic vocals, and music are heard intermittently over the white noise of a radio being tuned while pads reverb around the soundscape. A lovely rippling melody on some kind of plucked instrument sound then comes in to finally be joined by a laid back rhythm.
